Although one can purchase many kinds of tarpaulins from canvas, pvc, low cost plastic and so on, the most popular tarp sold and used today is the polyethylene tarp constructed of woven polyethylene and coated with a polyethylene coating making the product an impervious sheet of waterproof material. The sheeting is then manufactured in to a poly tarp.

Grommets and then added at either every eighteen inch's or one yard intervals to assist in tying down the tarp whilst being used used.The tarp is then strengthened by adding thin poly rope to to hem which help to strengthen the poly tarp.

Today I am going to mention four grades of Economy Tarpaulins and the suitability of each weight of tarp for the job in hand.A low quality poly tarp normally sold in blue ranging in weight from 2.1 ounces to 3.0 ounces. This type of tarp is sold everywhere from dollar shops to large diy stores and online vendors. Very cheap with eyelets spaced at every yard and is not suitable for long term covering requirements.I would advise that this product id used for anything that needs covering up for a short while only.

Disadvantages are that this quality of tarp does not have a uv inhibitor added so it will not last more than a couple of months in the sun.Also the tensile strength is low so it will not stand up to normal wear a tear very well. Not so suitable for boat coverings unless for a short period of time.

The mid grade tarp is the 4.5 ounce poly tarp often sold in a dual color of green on one side and silver on the other.This product in my mind is a very good low cost poly tarp that will stand up to the elements very well. Most reliable suppliers will offer this tarp with a UV treatment and grommets at every eighteen inches. Having silver coating on one side its UV durability is good as the silver helps reflect the suns rays.An ideal tarp for covering boats as well as where extra durability is required.Its it difficult to mention guarantee's with any poly tarp it really depends on the application and the weather. This tarp should last anything from one to two years.

Heavy duty 5 to 6.0 ounces is a very good competitively priced tarp and is extensively available form mainly specialist poly tarps suppliers which you can find by doing a Google search. Main colors for this product are solid white or silver, although green and black are also available. However, the white and silver are offered in many different sizes where as the black and green would have more limited availability. The white heavy duty tarp is often used for replacement canopy covers especially the 12ft x 20ft. Both white and silver poly tarps are ideal for boat coverings and suitable for covering up assets you may have,that you need to keep dry for a longer period of time.This product is also ideal in the agricultural industry and also for fumigation specialists.Heavy duty white tarps are used extensively for back yard ice rink tarps and can be used for several seasons.
